Accumulation Conveyor System

The accumulation conveyor is an increasingly popular fixture within warehouse automation systems today. This conveyor type allows for the buffering and “accumulating” of products at once. This serves as preparation for processing of the product in other sections of the line. Accumulation conveyors are well suited to this task, being highly flexible systems.

An accumulation conveyor system can transport products through the production line. Further, it can also regulate the flow of product to different sections of the facility. This conveyor type can also move product to other areas of the line for processing. Some functions that this system fulfils include sorting, packing, and loading. Additionally, there are also different types of accumulation conveyors.

Accumulation Conveyor Type

As mentioned, this conveyor type functions by buffering or moving product on the line. This occurs until the conveyor system control releases it where necessary. Eg, it could stop at the packaging area, then move on to the shipping area. Items can stop by resting against other items in front of them, or without allowing item contact.

These differences in stoppage method show the two main accumulation conveyor type. Specifically, these include contact zero pressure and non-contact zero pressure accumulation conveyors. Their exact functions and specifications exist as below.

Contact Zero Pressure Accumulation Conveyor Type

Accumulation Conveyors are an increasingly popular system within many industries today. Their high volume capacity makes them ideal for large scale operations.

This conveyor type allows products to rest against one another without incurring damage. This minimises the weight pushing against each product as on the line when moving or at rest. This pressure also only occurs at the few accumulation zones. The products will gently bump against one another as they come to rest, without damaging it.

These conveyor type are also able to optimise “discharge” rates for efficient output. The conveyor system allows for efficient use of accumulation area per linear meter.

Contact accumulation conveyor zones generally range from half a meter to 2 meters. This mostly depends on the accumulation conveyor’s speed. The products’ size and weight will also affect the contact zones. An ideal addition to this system is a sensor system used in conjunction with the conveyor. The sensors will detect the product in a specific position. Then, it will discharge or accumulate it as needed.

There is a wide range of options when it comes to accumulation conveyors. Eg, they can be “curved” around corners.

Non-Contact Zero Pressure Accumulation Conveyors

This conveyor type accumulates items without any contact between the items. These conveyor type use individual zones to achieve this, which can each hold one item. As an example, an 80 cm zone may be able to hold a single 50 cm box. As a result, this creates a 30 cm gap between boxes.

Much like a contact conveyor system, you can also use a sensor system to detect products in each zone. Then, it can allow or disallow product movement along the conveyor as needed. Manufacturers can customise accumulation conveyor zones to accommodate different product dimensions.

Non-contact accumulation conveyors can buffer products without any “pressure build-up” between them. This feature applies for products at the discharge end of the line. This means that this conveyor type is ideally suited to more fragile products. It’s also well-suited to products that differ in weight and size.
